Design system
One design system instead of five versions of the same button
Without a shared system, every new feature costs more than the last. We design the components and rules that stop that cost as the product and the team behind it grow.

When is a design system worth building?
Every new feature looks slightly different. Several people or teams work on the product and each solves the same elements in its own way.
A fix in one place does not reach the others, and pace drops with every release.
For the person who answers to the board for the product budget, that cost is hard to show in a table and easy to feel in the deadlines.
Who is a design system for?
- Several teams work on one product and each draws the same button its own way
- A Product Owner or head of product wants to keep quality and pace as features and people are added
- The company has several products or brands that should run on shared components
How it works
How is a design system built step by step?
01
Audit
We check how many variants of the same elements exist in the product today and where the interface drifts apart.
02
Foundations
We agree the rules with the team: colours, typography, spacing and design tokens, the named values every component draws on.
03
Components
We build a component library ready to use in design work and, if the system is to cover code, in code as well.
04
Documentation
We write usage guidelines so the team knows which component to reach for and how to add new ones.
After the project the product has one design system with usage guidelines. Design work speeds up, and the system safeguards quality without extra supervision.
How much does a design system cost?
from PLN 12,000 net
We price per project, from PLN 12,000 net. The amount grows with the scale of the product, and we agree scope and price after a short audit of the current state.
A call about the current state of the interface and an initial estimate carry no obligation. The system is built in stages, from audit to documentation, and after each one the team decides whether we continue. We reply to messages within a few hours.

„Bettonico Sp. z o.o. recommends Squares and Radosław Kołacki with full confidence as a Business Partner worth recommending. Our collaboration started in January 2021 and so far has covered building our website and graphic design projects.”
Work
How it works in practice
NoHo Group: four brands, one design system
One design system replaced four separate templates: Luca, Camping, The Bird and Cocks & Cows use the same components, and a change reaches all the sites at once.
Case study
Daily Effect: a design system built on variables
Components and themes support light and dark mode and two colour variants, and visual changes to the app are made in one place.
Case study
Keramzytbud: a design system for the brand's digital channels
The colour palette, typography, iconography and components keep the configurator and the brand's other digital channels consistent, and the elements can be reused in later projects.

Why Squares
We have designed design systems for organisations with many brands and products. At NoHo Group one system replaced four separate templates, and a change reaches all the sites at once. In the Daily Effect app, components built on variables support light and dark mode and two colour variants.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is a design system?
A design system is a shared set of interface components and rules for using them, drawn on by the designers and developers of one product or several. It consists of foundations (colours, typography, spacing and design tokens, meaning the named values every component uses), a component library and documentation. With it, the same button is not built five times.
How much does a design system cost?
A design system costs from PLN 12,000 net. The amount grows with the scale of the product: it depends on the number of components and on whether the system should cover code as well. We give the exact quote and scope after a short audit of the current state of the interface.
How long does it take to create a design system?
The time needed to create a design system depends on the number of components and on whether the system covers code. We give a date together with the quote, after a short audit of the current state. The system is built in four stages: audit, foundations, components and documentation, and after each one the team decides whether the work continues.
What does a design system consist of?
A design system consists of foundations, a component library and documentation. The foundations are colours, typography, spacing and design tokens. The library is ready to use in design files and, if the system covers code, in code as well. The documentation describes when to reach for which component and how to add new ones.
When does a company need a design system?
A design system is needed when every new feature looks slightly different and a fix in one place does not reach the others. This applies to products that several people or teams work on, and to companies with several products or brands. For one small product and one designer, a consistent UX/UI design is enough.
How is a design system different from a UX/UI design and a component library?
A UX/UI design describes a specific product, a component library is a collection of ready-made elements, and a design system combines the library with rules and documentation. Without rules a library drifts apart quickly, because every team adds its own variants. A design system says when to use which component and how to add new ones.
Is the design system built in code too?
Yes, a design system can cover code as well, not only design files. The coded components are prepared by the Squares team or by the client's team working from our documentation. The scope in code affects the price and the timeline, so the decision is made after the audit of the current state, before the quote.
Does a design system work for several brands or products?
Yes. At NoHo Group one design system replaced four separate templates: Luca, Camping, The Bird and Cocks & Cows share the same components, each brand has its own visual layer, and a change reaches all the sites at once. In the Daily Effect app the same set of components supports two colour variants and light and dark mode.
Who maintains the design system after the project ends?
After the project ends, the client's team maintains the design system, using the documentation that describes how to add new components. When the team lacks people for this, further development is taken on by UX packages, from PLN 5,000 net for 20 hours, or by the DesignOps service. In the Diagnosis, Design, Development, Optimisation process this is the Optimisation stage.
What does design system work require from the client's team?
We need access to the current design files and the product, because the work starts with counting the variants of the same elements. The rules, meaning colours, typography, spacing and tokens, are agreed together with the team. We work remotely, a light NDA is signed before the audit of the current state, and stages can be ordered under a framework agreement.
