User interviews

What users need is best explained by the users themselves

A roadmap decision built on assumptions costs as much as the features nobody later uses. We run in-depth interviews, meaning longer one-to-one conversations, and user tests, and turn the answers into findings a decision can be based on.

When are user interviews worth it?

Product decisions are made on assumptions, and nobody has talked to users in a long time. Or the data shows something isn't working, but not why.

A priority that has to be defended before the board is easier to defend with a recording of a user than with the team's conviction.

Who are user interviews for?

  • A roadmap, a redesign or a new feature is ahead, and user needs are known only from assumptions
  • The quantitative data is there, but nobody knows what is behind it
  • The users of a medtech or B2B product are specialists who are hard to reach
  • The team has no researcher, and research is needed from time to time

How it works

How do user interviews work step by step?

  1. 01

    Research goal

We set the research questions and decide who we need to talk to.

  2. 02

    Recruitment

We select participants and prepare the interview guide.

  3. 03

    Interviews

We run in-depth interviews or tests, remotely or on site.

  4. 04

    Analysis

We look for recurring patterns, problems and needs.

  5. 05

    Findings

We hand over a report and walk the team through it. Result: it is clear what to change in the product and why.

After the research, product decisions rest on what users actually said. What remains is a report with findings, quotes and interview recordings, plus a list of problems and needs ranked by importance.

How much do user interviews cost?

from PLN 4,000 net

A study costs from PLN 4,000 net. Pricing depends on the number of interviews, how participants are recruited, and whether we research in one country or several. We agree scope and price after a short call.

The call about the research goal and the initial estimate carry no obligation. We reply within a few hours.

Let's talk about research

Experience

What stands behind this service

We run user interviews and tests every day as part of audits and product workshops. We have not yet published a case study of research alone, so we show projects in which conversations with users were the starting point.

Why Squares

Every interview is analysed, and each finding gets a priority and a specific recommendation, so the team can act on it straight away. We talk to every role that uses the product to establish where the tool slows work down and why.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are user interviews?

User interviews are one-to-one conversations in which a researcher asks about the needs, ways of working and reasons behind the decisions of people who use a product. Squares runs in-depth interviews and user testing, remotely or on site. The result is a set of findings on which a decision about the roadmap, a redesign or a new feature can rest.

How much do user interviews cost?

The price of user interviews depends on three things: the number of interviews, how participants are recruited and the number of countries covered. We give the figure after a short call about the research goal, before the research starts. Scope is agreed together with the price, so the number of interviews is known up front.

How many users need to be interviewed?

Within one user group, a handful of interviews is enough to see recurring problems. With several groups, roles or markets the number goes up, because each of them needs its own interviews. We set the number of interviews together with the research goal.

How long does user research take?

The duration depends on the number of interviews and on how participants are recruited. The research has five stages: setting the goal, recruitment, interviews, analysis and findings. We agree the timeline together with the scope, after a short call about the research goal, so the report date is known before the start.

What does a user interview report contain?

The report contains findings, quotes and interview recordings, plus a list of problems and needs ranked by importance. Every finding has a priority and a specific recommendation, and we walk the team through the report. After the research it is clear what to change in the product and why. The findings feed the roadmap or become the starting point for UX/UI design.

When is it worth running user interviews?

Interviews are worth running before a roadmap, a redesign or a new feature, when user needs are known only from assumptions. The second moment is when quantitative data shows that something is not working but does not say why. The service also suits teams without their own researcher, where research is needed from time to time.

How are user interviews different from a UX/UI audit?

A UX/UI audit is an assessment of the product carried out by a designer, while interviews show the users' perspective: their needs, their language and the reasons behind their decisions. The audit answers what in the interface is not working; interviews answer why people act the way they do. User testing is also part of the Strategic audit package.

Who recruits the research participants?

We recruit participants ourselves or invite the company's customers. For hard-to-reach specialists, for example in medtech or B2B, a combination of both works best. We select participants and prepare the interview script once the research questions are set. The recruitment method affects the price of the research, so we agree it before quoting.

Can user interviews be run in English and in several countries?

Yes, we run interviews in Polish and in English, remotely, with participants from different countries. Research in several countries raises the number of interviews, because each market needs its own group of participants.

Is user research covered by an NDA?

Yes. A light NDA is signed before the research, because information about the company's customers and plans comes up in the interviews. For research repeated from time to time a framework agreement is available: fixed terms and a separate order for each new study, without agreeing everything from scratch.
